The Role of the Media

Media coverage

Media coverage is crucial to reinforce the impact of the UPR and its outreach for ordinary people, the rights-holders. In today’s interconnected world, the media contribute to creating human rights awareness and recall the obligations of States to safeguard human rights.

As a result, media actors play an essential role in nourishing dialogue on human rights and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They also provide valid support for the monitoring and follow-up of country-specific UPR recommendations.

UPR Info works to strengthen the engagement of media representatives in the UPR process by :

  • Organising capacity building activities to increase awareness about international mechanisms, in particular the UPR;
  • Facilitating the exchange of good practices on reporting on human rights issues raised by the UPR;
  • Creating partnerships with other stakeholders to reach out to national media representatives and strengthen cooperation with civil society organisations (CSOs).

Since 2019, UPR Info has developed specific training programmes for journalists.
